what is “Atang”?
In Tagalog “atang” means “to help carry” or “share a load”. In Ilocano “atang" is an ancestral offering of food placed on a dambana. My teachers in the Philippines also taught me that acts of service and living in harmony with our spiritual, human, and non-human neighbors can be offerings to our ancestors, spirits, and diwata. If we build relationships with each other and with our bodies as dambana, what portals can we open to our deeper selves, those who came before us, and those who will come after us? What kind of multi-dimensional, truly holistic healing is possible? Whatever shape this journey might take, none of us are meant to do it alone.
